Channapatna toys are famous for its uniqueness and makes use of Eco
friendly natural non toxic vegetable colours. Hence considered safe for children
and is exported worldwide.
These wooden toys are manufactured in the town of Channapatna, home for toys and dolls (hence popular as Gombegala ooru or toy town), located in the Bangalore Rural district of Karnataka state, India. This traditional craft is protected as a geographical indication (GI) under the World Trade Organization, administered by the Government of Karnataka. Traditionally, the work involved lacquering the wood of the Wrightia tinctoria tree, colloquially called Aale mara (ivory-wood).
